No matter whether you shop thrift or consignment both are “thrifty” as you are guaranteed to save a coin. Personally, I love anything that offers affordable prices and good quality merchandise. However, there is a difference between thrift stores and consignment stores. Below I have outlined the difference between the two in hopes of helping you to decide what better suites you.
Thrift Stores
- Thrift stores are usually non-profit and support a cause, ministry, and/or organization.
- Thrift stores are supplied by tax-deductible donations.
- Merchandise is donated from the community
- Lower prices
If you are interested in thrift stores look for the local Goodwill and Salvation Army in your area.
Consignment Stores
- Consignment stores are for profit.
- Consignment stores pay for their merchandise either up front or when an item sells.
- Better Quality Control
- Higher price point
If consignment is your preference look for the local Buffalo Exchange or Platos Closet in your area.
Some suggest that consignment stores are cleaner and more organized than thrift stores. Personally, I have not found this to be entirely true as I feel the cleanliness and organization of the store reflects the owner and/or management.
People also think that thrift store merchandise is all used items. I do not find this to be factual as I run across brand new tagged items every time I thrift. Additionally, the thrift store also sells brand name items as well.
If your looking to start shopping thrift and/or consignment be mindful that different stores have different inventory. Some places only sale clothing or furniture while other places sell everything from clothes to home décor.
Contrary to popular belief, there is something for everyone when it comes to secondhand shopping. Additionally, we are all thrifty in one way or another whether you shop thrift, consignment and/or retail. Being thrifty is just about being mindful of your spending habits and saving a coin when you can.
I shop thrift, consignment and retail! On most occasions I am wearing all three at the same time. If its “thrifty” I love it. Do you love them all equally? Do you have a preference?
